Why are the character sheets two-sided? What difference does gender make?
None
It's just a cosmetic difference. Choose whichever you prefer.
If I fight and lose some Wounds because my Weapon level is too low, and then I also have to reduce the Weapon level further, do I take more Wounds?
Yes
Yes, sorry! For instance, if you have Weapon level 1 and fight a Beast with strength 5, you take 4 Wounds in the fight. Then if the Beast also tells you to reduce the Weapon level by 2, you take a further 1 Wound because of unfulfilled demand.
What happens if the Soldier uses their ability to look at a card from the Hunting deck and then that deck is later shuffled?
Nothing
That's just what happens, so hard luck. The Soldier's ability is less useful than it would otherwise be. (Note that the Hunting deck is shuffled each time a new Beast card is added to it!)
If I'm told to discard something during an Action and I just gained that thing in the same Action, what happens?
Don't know
This is unclear. According to a strict reading of the rules, resources gained during an Action go to the Future Resources space and are unavailable until the end of the Action Phase, but this only happens at the _end_ of the Action. So there is no official decision on whether those resources can be used to pay a cost that arises _during_ the Action. This unclarity is acknowledged, but not resolved, in an online FAQ document.
Is there a specified order for resolving the three Action dice?
Yes
Wound first, then Success, then Adventure. (This can make a difference, because you might be killed by a Wound that you could otherwise have avoided through Determination tokens that you gain from the Success die!)
What if an Invention raises the Palisade or Roof but we have no Shelter?
It does nothing
The instruction to raise the Palisade or Roof is just ignored. As it is a one-off immediate effect, you can't save it up until later.
What happens to unused resources after an Action is resolved?
Get them back
Unused resources (from failed Build Actions, for instance) are moved back to the Available Resources space on the board. The rules are unclear about whether this should happen immediately after the Action in question has been resolved, or not until the end of the Action Phase. The game designer has admitted that this is a "grey area" and we know of no resolution yet!
Do Island tiles whose terrain types are covered still produce?
Are losses retroactive? If I lose something, do I reverse its benefits?
Sometimes
For Items that are flipped back to Inventions: yes, lose/reverse as many benefits as you can, but don't worry if there are some you can't. (This isn't unfulfilled demand.) For terrain types that become unexplored, there is no retroactive effect -- you can still keep the Items you built based on those terrain types, but you won't be able to build more.
Related Rule(s)
What do the weird little numbers on some board spaces mean (~4~ next to Threat space, etc)?
Phases
The numbers and their corresponding icons refer to phases of the game when those spaces are used.
Isn't there a way to score?
Nope
Some editions of this game have scoring mechanisms you can compare game to game. The current (second) edition doesn't have that.
Related Rule(s)
What does it mean when a card says "Resolve the effect again"?
This phrase is printed for the Threat Effect of some Event cards. It is just shorthand for "Go back to the top of the card and do the Event effect again". It isn't intended to create an infinite loop where you do the whole card again and again, (putting it in the Threat space for a second time, etc etc). In the rules on this app, this phrase is spelled out more precisely in descriptions of individual cards.
Related Rule(s)
How does the ownership of Items work?
It's complicated!
Once built, Items and Treasures are available to everyone. Many such cards can only be used by one character per round; if this is the case, it is specified in the rules in this app, and sometimes on the cards themselves. A few cards (Sack, Basket) must be assigned to Actions during the planning step of the Action Phase. Finally, some cards have no ownership, and can be used by multiple characters without limit (Bed, Hammock).
If I have to do something, but I can't do all of it, do I do any of it?
Yes
Yes, you always have to do as much as you can. For instance, if you have to lower your Weapon level by 3, and you only have Weapon level 2, just lower it by 2. You may then take a Wound as the result of the rule of unfulfilled demand, unless the card specifies otherwise. The exception is if there are othe consequences specified: for instance, if a card tells you to "discard 2 wood or take 1 Wound if you can't", and you only have 1 wood, keep the wood and take the Wound.
Related Rule(s)
What happens if I have to cover a source and there isn't one?
This is unfulfilled demand, so everyone suffers a Wound. (This applies if you're looking at an island tile that has no uncovered matching sources, or if you're looking at a card, which isn't the kind of thing that can have a source at all.)
If something can be used "at any time", what does that actually mean?
Abilities and effects that say they can be used at any time can be used at any time! You can invoke an ability, for instance, after rolling dice or drawing a card, but before resolving the results of that roll or draw. The only limitation is that you can't rewind time: you can't change your mind about something you've already done in order to squeeze in the use of an ability that you didn't want to use until just now!
When I move the camp, do tokens go with it?
Mostly
Yes, except the Shortcut. But if there is already an identical token on the destination space, then discard the token that you would be moving.
Can I pay for the Shelter, Roof or Palisade in a combination of wood and fur?
No
No, you must use either wood or fur in a single Action, but not a mixture of both.
What happens if more than one game effect reduces me to one Action pawn in the same round?
You get one
You just get one Action pawn. You can never have fewer than that.
How do I get rid of the Gremlins?
You can't
You can't. Once the Gremlins card is in the Event deck, it keeps coming back!
Related Rule(s)
What if a card only gives a Beast's strength and no other values?
Just fight it
Just fight the Beast at that strength, using the normal combat rules. Skip the steps where you would reduce the Weapon level and gain resources.
Can Dog die?
No
No, he can't even take wounds. Just like in real life, all dogs are immortal.
Related Rule(s)
Is Dog a character?
No
He is just a neutral pawn.
Related Rule(s)
Do I have to assign all Action pawns?
Yes and no
In the planning stage of the Action Phase, you have to assign all characters' Action pawns. But you can leave Friday's pawn and neutral pawns (including Dog) unassigned if you want.
Does Friday count as a player?
No
No, which means that his presence doesn't affect the cost of the Shelter, Roof or Palisade, or anything else that involves counting the number of players.
Related Rule(s)
Why can't Friday sleep in the Bed or Hammock?
He doesn't want to
He's uncomfortable with such creature comforts and prefers to sleep under the open sky.
Related Rule(s)
Is Friday's pawn a neutral pawn?
No
No, which means Friday can be assigned alone to Actions if you want.
What happens when Friday gets a Special Wound?
He can't
Friday never draws Adventure cards, so he can't get a Special Wound.
Can Friday use Items, Treasures and Starting Equipment?
Who counts as a character? Who counts as a player?
Obviously, the real-life human players are players. Beyond that, Jenny (scenario 3) is a character, and she counts as a player for the purposes of cards that affect all players, but not for the purposes of working out the costs of the Shelter, Roof and Palisade. Friday is not a character or a player: effects that specifically affect characters do not affect him, he can never be the First Player and his death doesn't end the game.
Can Friday die?
Yes
Yes, but you don't lose the game, just Friday's card and pawn.
Related Rule(s)
What happens if I'm told to increase the Roof or Palisade but I don't have a Shelter?
Ignore it
Just ignore the instruction with no penalty.
Can the Roof or Palisade go higher than the maximum values on the board?
Yes!
Yes. Use any convenient markers to record the higher values.
If I have to halve something, do I round up or down?
It depends
The instruction that tells you to halve something will always tell you whether to round up or down. BUT note that some cards say "Lose half of X, rounding down". In this case, read it literally: it is the LOST part that is rounded down, i.e. you lose less than you otherwise would -- it is rounded in your favour!
What does the "closest source" mean?
If you are instructed to find the "closest source" of resources to the camp, the closest source is on the same Island tile as the camp. If there is none there, then the closest source is adjacent, and if there is none there either, then further away. Exhausted sources don’t count when working out the closest source.
What happens when a source is exhausted?
You cover it up with a black marker, and it no longer produces resources, either in the Production Phase or for Gather Actions.

What's the difference between perishable and non-perishable food?
The two types of food are are identical in game terms, except that non-perishable food is not discarded at the end of the round.
Who suffers the Wounds from unfulfilled demand?
It depends!
When Wounds must be suffered because of unfulfilled demand, all characters suffer the Wounds, except: (1) during the Action Phase, only the character resolving the Action suffers the Wound(s); (2) in the specific case of combat that takes place during the Event Phase, the outcome of the combat (including any unfulfilled demand) only affects the First Player.
Related Rule(s)
What's the difference between an Invention and an Item?
An Invention is an Item that hasn't been built yet -- or, to put it the other way, an Item is an Invention that has already been built!
Do snow clouds count twice in the Weather Phase?
Yes.
Yes. In the Weather Phase, you first discard 1 wood for every snow cloud, and then you compare your Roof level to the amount of snow and rain clouds. If the amount of clouds is greater, you have to discard more wood and food.
In what order do I resolve Actions?
From left to right
Actions are resolved in order from left to right along the bottom of the board. But if the same Action is performed more than once, you can choose the order. This applies to Build Actions too.
Can I plan for an Action if I don't have the prerequisites yet?
No!
All requirements must already be met during the planning stage of the Action Phase in order to assign pawns. You can’t assign pawns to an Action unless you already meet the requirements, even if you expect to meet the requirements during the resolution stage.
Can I use an Item more than once per round?
Yes, in general
Yes, unless the Item's rules say otherwise, or unless it is discarded when used. Note that some Items can only be used by one character per round, but even in this case, that character can use them multiple times.
What are neutral pawns for?
Supporting Actions
Neutral pawns are used exactly like a character’s pawns, except that they can only be used for certain Actions corresponding to their colours. Also, no Action may be resolved with only neutral pawns. A neutral pawn can only be used to participate in an action after at least 1 character Action pawn has been assigned by a character who will resolve that Action (and suffer any consequences).
Which character suffers the consequences of an Action?
Resolving character
The resolving character is the one whose pawn is placed on top of the stack during planning. That character suffers all the consequences, both positive and negative. Other characters' pawns in the stack are supporting, and can't be affected by the consequences.
What's the space on the board for that looks like the Beast deck?
It's to make the Hunting deck during the game. During setup, leave the space empty and put the Beast deck off to the side.
What happens if the camp token becomes inaccessible?
You lose the game!
If the Island tile with the camp token becomes completely inaccessible, you lose the game. This could happen, for instance, if the tile gets flipped over because of scenario special rules and you are unable to move the camp.
Can Morale go off the end of the track?
No
The Morale marker cannot move further left than the leftmost space, or further right than the rightmost space. If a game effect would cause this to happen, do not move the marker, and do not suffer any additional penalty.
Related Rule(s)
What if a deck of cards runs out?
It depends.
In general, when cards are discarded they're removed from the game, so when a deck runs out, it's gone. Mystery cards are an exception: resolved Mystery cards go into a discard pile which you can reshuffle if the deck runs out, while unresolved ones are shuffled straight back into the draw pile. Another exception is the Carpenter's 'A new idea' ability: Invention cards you don't choose when using this ability form a discard pile which gets reshuffled if the deck runs out.
Related Rule(s)
Where do discarded tokens and cards go?
It depends.
Discarded Mystery cards are kept and reshuffled if the deck runs out; all other discarded cards are removed from the game. Discarded Discovery tokens are removed from the game; all other tokens and markers are returned to the stock. (The Carpenter's 'A new idea' special ability is an exception to this rule.)
Related Rule(s)
What is the weird tan-coloured symbol that looks like three items in a rectangle?
Starting Equipment
It means 'draw a random Starting Equipment card'. It appears on the Captain's Chest Wreckage card.
What is the Shovel for?
Lots of cards
A large number of cards, especially Event cards, require the Shovel to complete their Threat Action.
Related Rule(s)
What is the Rope for?
Other Inventions
A number of other Inventions have the Rope as one of their requirements.
What is Medicine for?
Avoiding penalties
If you have Medicine, the Wounds you take from a variety of game effects (especially Mystery and Event cards) are reduced.
Why are there two different food source icons?
The difference is mostly just thematic. Both food sources (parrot and fish) just produce food, and any game effect that just refers to a food source refers to both. However, a few cards specify that they affect either the parrot or the fish icons.
Related Rule(s)
How do I get non-perishable food?
Inventions
A few Inventions, Starting Equipment cards and even some Events give you non-perishable food. And a few other Inventions make all your food non-perishable.
