Setup

menu

Setup always follows the same basic steps, with a few variations based on the scenarios you play. These setup instructions use scenario 1 as an example. Each scenario consists of several modules. All special features of the subsequent scenarios are explained in the Modules category, where you will find all the information on each scenario. Before setting up a game for scenarios 2 through 7, thoroughly read through the special rules for that scenario. Then set up the game as normal. The dice are not used during scenario 1.

1. Place the 3 boards in the center of the table.

2. Place the workbench next to the base camp board. Place the graveyard next to the workbench.

3. Place the resources and damage tokens next to the boards to form a supply. Place 5 food on the base camp board.

4. Sort the tool tokens by type. Next, place 5 torches, 5 stone axes, and 5 spears on the corresponding spaces on the workbench. Place the remaining tool tokens in front of the workbench.

These tools are available from the beginning of the game in every scenario. Place all remaining tool tokens in front of the workbench.

5. Place the 5 skull and 5 victory tokens next to the night board.

6. Take the following 3 card sets: People, Dreams, and Ideas. Shuffle each set separately, then place them facedown on the 3 corresponding spaces on the base camp board.

7. Each player draws 2 humans from the base camp board and places them faceup in front of them.

These 2 humans form each player’s starting group.

Each player takes the tool tokens shown on their human cards and places them near their group.

! The details of the following steps may vary depending on the different modules you are playing with. When playing any scenario other than scenario 1, be sure to read the rules supplement first.

8. Each module contains 1 mission card, shown by the moon on the card back.

Place them faceup on the spaces with the sunset symbol on the night board.

For scenario 1, the mission cards for the 2 modules used are “Bountiful Prey” and “A New World.”

8. Each module contains 1 mission card, shown by the moon on the card back. Place them faceup on the spaces with the sunset symbol on the night board.

For scenario 1, the mission cards for the 2 modules used are “Bountiful Prey” and “A New World.”

9. Take the set of secret cards, separate out the ones used in this scenario, and place them as a facedown deck on the night board. The secrets you need are shown by the numbers on the card backs.

For scenario 1 you need secrets 1 & 2 only.

9. Take the set of secret cards, separate out the ones used in this scenario, and place them as a facedown deck on the night board. The secrets you need are shown by the numbers on the card backs.

For scenario 1 you need secrets 1 & 2 only.

10. Some modules include ideas, which you place on the workbench. If tools are shown on those idea cards, place the corresponding tool tokens in the slot in front of that card.

For scenario 1, module B contains the “Tent” idea card. Place that card along with the 3 tent tokens on the workbench.

11. Shuffle all remaining module cards in with the base card set (1). Deal all of these cards facedown, as evenly as possible, among all players. These facedown cards are your deck.

! Do not look at the card fronts!

Often, players will receive different numbers of cards. This is not a problem and is not a disadvantage.

For scenario 1 there should be 8 module A cards and 9 module B cards remaining. Shuffle those 17 cards facedown with the 32 base cards, and deal them out evenly to all players.
