If the box with the effect if yellow, apply the effect immediately after placing the tile.

If the box with the effect is grey, apply the effect at the end of the game

The Cartographer and the Gunner both have a symbol (sextant or bomb) to remind you that they interact with the effects of the Navigator and Carpenter, respectively.
